About Higher Education in Wales

Higher Education in Wales has a reputation for world class teaching and research. It has an established credit framework which operates across the whole sector, is compatible with the ECTS, helping to bring forward the Diploma Supplement in Wales; and, it is continuing to build links to facilitate joint degrees and student mobility. Around 103,000 undergraduate and 24,000 postgraduate students are now enrolled in Wales.

The Higher Education sector is fundamental to a future for Wales based on a strong knowledge-driven economy. The sector already makes a significant contribution to the economic, social and cultural well-being of Wales, and generates more than €1.5 billion per annum in gross expenditure for the Welsh economy. Wales has 13 Higher Education Institutions which are closely linked to industry through networks, technium centres and incubator units which provide a major source of technology expertise for Welsh and international businesses and encourage collaboration between SMEs and higher education institutions. Teaching Company Schemes stimulate innovation through technology transfer and training and further support the transfer of knowledge, research and development.

The websites of all of the Higher Education Institutions in Wales can be accessed from the website of Higher Education Wales at http://www.hew.ac.uk/institutions.html.

The Wales International Consortium has produced an e-Guide to Higher Education in Wales, which is available for download here.
